Recently, I asked a friend if they take adaptogens. They nodded, then shook their head, then looked confused. Finally, they asked if it's in protein powder...
'Adaptogens' is the buzzword everyone keeps hearing about, but no one really knows why they should take them (or if they already do). If you're like my friend, here's the answer: adaptogens aren't in most protein powders, but they are definitely worth adding to your supplement stack.
We did the research and narrowed it down to the 3 big reasons why you need to be taking adaptogens:
1. They help train the body instead of just affecting it
Our problem with so many vitamins, powders, and supplements is that they can act like quick fixes. You might take a certain vitamin or mineral because you're deficient. So that pill raises your levels and you're back to normal... for now.
Adaptogens are different. They train your body and mind at a cellular level to do a better job handling stress (of all kinds!). This incredible capability is so unique, Dr. Brenda Powell of the Cleveland Clinic has gone so far as to say that adaptogens may do for your adrenal glands what exercise does for your muscles.²
“When we exercise, it’s a stress on our body. But as we continue to train and exercise, our body becomes better at dealing with the stress of it, so we no longer get as tired or as high a heart rate,” she says. When you take adaptogens, meanwhile, “you’re training your body to handle the effects of stress.”
2. Their natural active ingredients can't be found in anything else
Tons of adaptogens have active ingredients that are so unique, scientists end up naming them after the plant itself.
Take Bacosides, for example. They're a chemical compound found only in Bacopa (a key ingredient in our Focus blend). Bacosides have been studied to help improve memory, improve ADHD, and regulate neurotransmitters in the brain without any side effects.¹
And they quite literally can only be found in Bacopa!
The same goes for Rosavins and Salidrosides in Rhodiola, Schisandrins in Schisandra, the list goes on...
3. Their long-term benefits are endless
A great example of playing the supplement long game is collagen, or even protein powder. There are certainly short term benefits, but many of us are taking these powders because we believe that over the coming months, or even years, we'll be better off for it. If we start taking collagen now, we're going to reap the benefits for years down the line (even if we don't see our skin improve overnight).
